A damper valley asks different things of a wall
Shelter and water are what make the valley what it is, and both work on a building. Humidity stays higher, walls dry more slowly, north-facing elevations stay green, and a stone house that would be perfectly dry in the interior of the island holds moisture here for longer. It is not a fault in the building; it is the climate the building sits in.
Which makes the choice of finish more consequential than almost anywhere. A traditional wall carries moisture through itself and releases it at the surface, so a cement render or a modern impermeable paint traps it inside the stone. In a drier place that mistake takes years to show. Here it shows sooner and more visibly, usually as damp appearing above where the coating stops.
The same logic runs through the whole specification. Lime rather than cement, breathable paints, ventilation designed rather than assumed, and floors that are not sealed against a ground that is holding water. Any company used to working in the valley will raise this unprompted, and one that does not is worth asking directly.

The damp keeps coming back after repainting. Why?
Because paint is the symptom rather than the cause, and an impermeable one makes it worse by holding moisture in the wall. The usual answer is to remove what is sealing the wall and let it breathe again, which is slower and lasts.
Is lime really necessary, or is it fashion?
On a stone wall in this valley it is closer to necessary. The wall was built to move water and a modern render stops it, so the moisture goes somewhere else in the building instead. On modern blockwork the argument is much weaker.
